Wallpaper Label Symbols Explained

You’ll notice some symbols on the label from your roll of wallpaper.

These symbols follow European standards and are designed to help you understand the properties of the wallpaper you’ve chosen.

Pattern Matching

Straight match diagram Straight match – This is where the left and right edges of the wallpaper length match in a straight horizontal line with the left and right edges of the next length.
Free match diagram Free match – This means there is no matching necessary and so the wallpaper lengths can be hung freely without worrying about matching.
Offset match diagram Offset match – Also known as drop match or half drop. When hanging a second wallpaper length next to the first length already on the wall, the second length is dropped by the distance indicated so that the pattern joins up across both lengths.
Reverse alternative lengths symbol Reverse Alternative Lengths – Method of hanging wallpaper whereby adjacent lengths are reversed.

Horizontal hanging symbol Horizontal Hanging – Method of hanging a wallpaper whereby the lengths are hung horizontally.

Washability

Spongeable symbol  Spongeable – Using a water dampened cloth, adhesive maybe wiped from the face of the wallpaper at the time of hanging without visible damage, provided the adhesive is still damp. No other type of washability is claimed or implied.
 Washable symbol Washable – Using a damp cloth and soapy water, dirt and some domestic water based stains maybe cleaned carefully from the wallpaper. Oils, fats and solvent based stains are not expected to be removable.
 Extra washable symbol Extra Washable – Using a damp cloth and soapy water, dirt and most domestic water based stains maybe cleaned carefully from the wallpaper. Oils, fats and solvent based stains are not expected to be removable, but some greasy stains can be removed if action is taken immediately.
 Scrubbable symbol Scrubbable – Using a mild detergent or mild abrasive with a soft brush or sponge, dirt and most domestic water based stains maybe cleaned from the wallpaper. If action is taken immediately then oils, fats and certain solvent based stains can also be removed.

 Extra scrubbable symbol Extra Scrubbable – Dirt and all domestic water based stains maybe cleaned from the wallcovering by intensive treatment with a sponge or soft brush and a mild detergent or mild abrasive. Oils, fats and certain solvent based stains can also be removed if action is taken immediately after contamination.

Application Method


 Paste the product symbol
Paste the product – Wallpaper adhesive is applied to the back of the wallpaper and allowed to soak before hanging.
 Paste the wall symbol Paste the wall – Wallpaper adhesive is applied directly to the wall before hanging the wallpaper.
 Pre-pasted symbol Pre-pasted – The wallpaper already has a coat of adhesive applied to the back. To activate the adhesive, the wallpaper must be submerged into a tray containing water.

Removal Method

 Strippable symbol Strippable– This applies to wallpaper that can be removed manually in a dry state, by pulling it away in one piece.
 Peelable symbol Peelable– This applies to wallpaper where you can manually remove the decorative or protective surface from its backing in a dry state. The backing will remain on the wall.
 Wet removable symbol Wet removable – This applies to wallpaper that can be removed from the wall by soaking it with water, using a proprietary stripping agent or steaming it. A scraper is then used to remove it.
